Did you know that all Grapplearts instructional videos use extensive footage from competition to illustrate the techniques being taught?

I believe in competition. Competition is the main reason that grappling continues to evolve at such a dizzying pace. As soon as someone develops a new move or strategy, someone else is working on a counter. Tournaments also allow me to test my technical ability, physical conditioning and mental preparation in a relatively safe environment (compared to, say, a streetfight). As Erik Paulson says, sometimes you learn more in a 5 minute match than you do in 6 months of training

Some of my tournament results include the following:

  • First Place - 2005 Grapplemania Seattle
  • Gold and Bronze medals - 2004 Tiger Balm Martial Arts Championships
  • Silver and Bronze medals- 2002 Police Fire Can-Am games Submission Grappling
  • 2 Gold medals - First Canadian Grappling Grand Prix 2002
  • 2 Gold medals - 2001 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu US Open
  • Gold medal - 2000 Canada West Judo Open
  • First Place - 2000, Western Canadian Martial Arts Challenge
  • First Place - 2000 Fireball Challenge
  • 2 First Place finishes - 1999 Fireball Challenge
  • Gold medal - Marcus Soares Club Tournament (1998)
  • 2 Gold medals - 1998 Canadian International Juijitsu Championships

I have also competed in other events, such as 10 km runs and the Firefighter Combat Challenge. You can learn to deal with pressure and adrenaline by doing a variety of sports!
