Motivation in BJJ is a tricky thing…
Some people are mostly motivated to train by internal factors. Typically they feel it’s personally rewarding, the process of learning is and improving their skills is it’s own reward.
Other people are more heavily motivated by external factors. Maybe they really want to achieve their next belt, or they need their coach’s approval, or they want a shelf full of tournament medals.
This internal vs external motivation – also known as intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation – is a continuum. When it comes to BJJ very few people are 100% at either end of the spectrum, and most people find themselves somewhere in between.
I recently did a Facebook live session on my Grapplearts Facebook page in which I discussed intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation. I also covered some motivation tricks you can use to train harder and improve your jiu-jitsu.
The part about intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation runs roughly from 2:00 to 16:30, and I did a short Q&A session afterwards.
