Today we’re going to talk about the fourth brand new instructional app in the Spider Guard Masterclass series, and cover a few new positions in the process. And in the process we’re going to talk about some very powerful open guard positions…
The app is called Spider Guard Masterclass Volume 4: Next Level Spider Guard, Part 2, and it focuses on three powerful variations of Spider Guard:
- The Collar-Sleeve position,
- The Spider-Collar position, and
- The Reverse de la Riva position.
These are positions that have become part of the modern BJJ arsenal because they provide answers to many of the counters and guard pass attempts that your opponents may try on you.

Jiu-jitsu is evolving so rapidly that if you don’t keep up you’ll be left behind.
In this fourth of five Spider Guard apps you’ll get a complete gameplan, techniques and strategies for the modern variations of Spider Guard including Collar-Sleeve Spider Guard, Spider-Collar Guard and Reverse de la Riva Guard!
These are positions that’ll bypass your opponent’s defenses and allow you to sweep them, tap them out, and be the king of the mat.
When you apply this grip to Spider Guard you get a very powerful position…
The push-pull force that you can generate here is incredible, and there are a TON of effective attacks you can launch.
(In the fourth Spider Guard app Elliott teaches no less than SIX variations of the omoplata, just from this one position. Plus a bunch of sweeps, triangles and other attacks. So you’ve truly got a lot of difficult-to-block options from here!)
In this variation you control only one sleeve of your opponent, and use your free hand to control the lapel.
So one of your feet is on his bicep, but the other foot is free to post on the ground, hook his legs, kick out his base, etc.
This makes it a lot easier on the grips than the conventional Spider Guard, and really allows you to move your opponent around.
This ability to move your opponent around then sets up your submissions, including the famous kneebar that Braulio Estima used at the 2013 World Championships (yes, we’ll show you exactly how to do this kneebar too).
The Reverse de la Riva position isn’t often thought of in a Spider Guard context, but it’s such a powerful counter to many of the most common guard passes that competitors have started combining the two positions.
A Reverse de la Spider if you will…
But you’ll learn that the Reverse de la Riva isn’t just a defensive position – there are some very powerful sweeps and back takes that you can launch from here that are very difficult for your opponent to block.
Broken down into easy-to-follow steps, now you can add the exact techniques being used by world champion BJJ players to your own game.
This is the bleeding edge of modern jiu-jitsu! The newest jiu-jitsu technology, ready to be deployed against all your favourite sparring partners.
You’ll learn techniques used by black belt world champions at the Pan-Ams and Mundials, but crazy flexibility and athleticism are NOT required.
The bottom line is that with this app get several complete positional gameplans with many, many options, strategies, techniques and advanced tips to keep your opponents guessing for a long, long time.
Volume 4 of Spider Guard Masterclass is simply the most detailed, comprehensive, and useful resource ever produced on these modern, competition-proven, and incredibly powerful variations of the Spider Guard.
