There’s a concept I’ve been using in my own training for a long time; I call it “What limbs do I have left?”
In jiu-jitsu, you have 5 limbs (your arms, your legs, and your head) at your disposal.
Anytime you reach an impasse in your rolling – whether you just can’t finish an offensive technique or can’t escape a bad position – ask yourself whether all your limbs are committed and, if not, how you can use them to escape.
This concept is much easier to understand with an illustration…
Check out the video below that shows how the “What limbs do I have left” works in real time. In it I show how to use your free leg to break Kimura grips when you’re on the bottom and escape a half guard stalemate situation when you’re on top.
Figuring out which limbs are free at any given moment and how to bring them into play will give you a huge advantage on the mats.
Tell me if this concept works for you,
Stephan
P.S. Since the Kimura is pretty central to the two examples of “What limbs do I have left” that we covered above, you might want a cool resource I produced for the Kimura. And it’s free.

P.P.P.S. This concept is articulated and illustrated much more fully in the Black Belt Concepts Course available here on Grapplearts. And this particular concept is just one small part of the game-changing approach to jiu-jitsu that you’ll get in the complete course.
