Top 10 Wrestling Moves for BJJ

February 6, 2023 by Stephan Kesting

wrestling moves for bjj

by Jeff Meszaros In many ways, wrestling and Brazilian jiu jitsu are total opposites. The core concepts of the two sports run against each other, and what's a great idea in one art is often a terrible idea in the other. In wrestling, you do anything you can to avoid having your back put on the mat. But in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, people will often fall to their backs immediately to "pull guard" … [Read more...]

3 Easy Throws for BJJ

December 9, 2022 by Stephan Kesting

A simple strategy and 3 easy throws for BJJ

People often ask me what the easiest throws or takedowns are for BJJ competition. My usual advice is that takedowns are great.  They bring the fight to your opponent, score 2 points, set you up to pass the guard, and allow you to fight from the top.  All of which are good things. Now I love wrestling and judo, and think that takedowns are essential skills, but training them to a high level … [Read more...]

Top 10 Throws and Takedowns for BJJ

10 Throws and takedowns for BJJ

I'll go ahead and say it: every practitioner should have at least a couple of throws and takedowns for BJJ.  Yes, it's true that pulling guard is an option in sport BJJ competition, but ultimately this is a martial art, which means we have to at least occasionally consider the self defense aspects of what we're doing. Are you going to pull guard in a streetfight?  Not bloody likely. In this … [Read more...]

Single and Double Leg Takedowns for Beginners

May 3, 2019 by Stephan Kesting

Double and Single Leg Takedowns

My friend Rob Biernacki and I recently shot a video about two of the most important takedowns for grappling: the single and the double leg takedowns. These are deeply complex techniques that can be explored and elaborated on endlessly, but for beginners it's sometimes good to keep things simple. However we let our inner smartasses run wild when we were filming this material, so the … [Read more...]

A Throw and Leglock Combination

September 13, 2018 by Stephan Kesting

throw to leglock submission combo

In the video above my friend and training partner Ritchie Yip shows a really cool throw that goes directly into a match-ending submission. Specifically it's a combination of a throw called Yoko Sumi Gaeshi and the kneebar submission. Yoko Sumi Gaeshi is one of my very favourite throws, and I learned the details of it from UFC champion and Sambo practitioner Oleg Taktarov. This throw … [Read more...]

Setting Up and Finishing the Single Leg Takedown in BJJ with the Gi

July 11, 2018 by Stephan Kesting

single leg takedown bjj

The single leg takedown is one of the main moves in freestyle wrestling, but it becomes considerably harder to pull off when you put the gi on. That's because with the gi  your opponent usually just grabs your lapel and sleeve, stiff-arms away, and makes it hard to get at his legs. This can be very frustrating for people looking for single and double leg wrestling takedowns in BJJ. Now judo … [Read more...]

Christmas Office Party Jiu-Jitsu

December 19, 2017 by Stephan Kesting

Office party jiu-jitsu

Tis the season, and there's a very good chance that you'll be going to one or more Christmas parties in the next few weeks. I hope those parties stay friendly, but you can never be too careful.  Let's just say that things can go sideways QUICKLY! A little bit too much rum in the eggnog... The wrong person under the mistletoe... Accidentally giving your girlfriend an oversized piece of … [Read more...]

Judo Throws for BJJ

June 5, 2017 by Stephan Kesting

Judo throws for BJJ

For the most part, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is about fighting on the ground. But that raises a big question. Namely, how do you get an opponent down there in the first place? Whether it's in a sport competition, mixed martial arts or a street fight, that's an important question you need to answer and having no answer is bad. Very bad. One way to get around the issue entirely is to pull … [Read more...]

by Jeff Meszaros So, we’ve finished the first leg of your around-the-world grappling tour and it’s been a blast (click here to read Asian Grappling Styles, the previous article). Asian Grappling Styles

by Jeff Meszaros Do you like traveling? Of course you do! There’s the food, the music, the culture, the art, and if you’re a martial artist, you can bring along your mouthguard and try the local style of fighting, whatever it may be. Depending on the place, you might also need your shorts, pants, jacket, belt or jug of oil. Because each country has its own distinct style. Wouldn’t it be fun … [Read more...]
